The Team
As part of Provincial Operations, BCWS’ Cultural and Prescribed Fire program team is responsible for developing, coordinating and supporting the safe expansion of cultural burning and prescribed fire on the land in BC. The team supports regional program delivery, develops policy and guidance, and leads initiatives to expand partnerships, build expertise and capacity, address knowledge gaps, strengthen public awareness, and integrate fire stewardship into forest management and other land stewardship policies and toolkits

The Role
Reporting to the Land and Resource Specialist (Cultural and Prescribed Fire), the Wildfire Technician works in a variety of settings and with diverse teams and is responsible for performing a core set of program functions related to prescribed fire and fire management. This role carries out and participates in to support land/resource management decisions and resolve complex stewardship issues and is expected to maintain active operational competence for field and office-based assignments.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Degree in a field related to forestry, resource management or equivalent knowledge, plus 1 year recent related experience; or
  • Technical diploma in a field related to forestry, resource management, or equivalent knowledge, plus 3 years recent related experience; or
  • Grade 12 plus 5 years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and training; and
    • Related experience is defined as operations or other disciplines related to natural resource management.
  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience.
  • Valid class 5 driver licence.

Preference may be given to candidates with:

  • Incident Commander 4 or higher.
  • Experience in adult education or technical instruction
  • BCWS or CIFFC/NWCG certifications in prescribed fire (trainee status or functional equivalency will be considered)
