Job Description

  • Ensures the operational integrity of all hardware, operating systems, core components and application software on Selkirk College employees’, computer lab and classroom computers.
  • Provides support for college audio visual equipment including use, planning, maintenance, troubleshooting, sign-out, limited user training and setups for college events.
  • Provides network user support including:
    • Managing network user accounts, including staff email accounts;
    • Responds to network outages by evaluating the scope of the outage (LAN only, network drives, mail service, internet, WAN), determining all affected systems, attempting first line resolutions and notifying network administrators of problem details;
    • Creating network shared folders including assigning user trustees and permissions; and
    • Monitoring/managing Virus activity via management console.
  • Provides user support and instruction including:
    • Planning and managing all areas of desktop support, consulting with users and providing technical and non-technical solutions to aid business processes of the college;
    • Assisting faculty, staff and students with computer issues ranging from basic to very complex;
    • Advising faculty and staff on the purchase or implementation of new technology and making purchase recommendations to IT Services Department Head for lab replacements and other required resources;
    • Advising faculty and staff on proper file management and backup procedures;
    • Diffusing high tension situations regarding IT rules and regulations and the use of Selkirk College equipment and labs by faculty, staff, students and outside users;
    • Consulting with external guests regarding their IT requirements for special events;
    • Instructing new teaching staff and other employees in network and email procedures, and software operation to help them best utilize the College’s computer infrastructure;
    • Providing orientations to groups of students regarding the College network and computer use policies, login procedures, and use of network resources and software; and
    • Training staff, instructors, external guests and CE instructors in the use of classroom audiovisual equipment.
  • Provides software/hardware analysis, maintenance and support including:
    • Setting up new computers and maintaining existing ones;
    • Setting up, configuring and trouble-shooting regular and specialty software;
    • Solving complex software interaction issues through research, testing and modification to ensure software packages function in a secure network environment without loss of functionality;
    • Setting up and trouble-shooting printers, plotters, large format scanners and digitizers, including accessing network printer management software;
    • Creating custom software images for lab and staff computers including evaluating available hardware, user needs and software licenses;
    • Upgrading operating systems, applications and layered products on computer systems;
    • Delivering software fixes/solutions via workstation lifecycle management software including automated software deployment solutions; and
    • Maintaining computer component inventories by organizing, ordering and saving parts so that a supply of common components is readily available.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.

Education and Experience

  • 2-year Diploma in Computer Information Systems or Computer Science
  • CompTIA A+ certification or equivalent
  • Minimum 2-3 years related industry experience
  • Valid BC driver’s license and reliable vehicle to travel to various Selkirk campuses
  • Experience in an educational institution preferred

These are two temporary, full-time (100%) positions, commencing January 20, 2025, and ending June 20, 2025. The salary is pay grade 9 – $33.67 per hour in accordance with the PPWC Collective Agreement.
