Selkirk Ion Source Research Chair
Job Description
Selkirk College invites applications for the position of Selkirk Ion Source Research Chair. Working under the direction of the Director of Applied Research and Innovation, the Research Chair will be a highly collaborative member of the Selkirk Innovates research team, including researchers housed at the Selkirk Technology Access Centre (STAC) in Trail and Applied Research and Innovation Centre (ARIC) in Castlegar. The Chair will advance an ion source technologies-focused research agenda, support the advancement of research and development projects with small and medium sized enterprises (SME), and support the advancement of programming and/or training in the areas of SME innovation, technology transfer, and entrepreneurship. The Chair will also support work integrated learning opportunities for students and contribute as a faculty member on other Selkirk Innovates projects.
The Selkirk Ion Source Research Chair is supported through multi-year research funding. Based on a foundation of applied discovery research, the goals for the Research Chair are:
- Launch the Selkirk Ion Source Research Centre (SIRC) and provide intellectual leadership to the research program;
- Build and support the delivery of SIRC learning opportunities for students – including a MITACS funded research internship program;
- Facilitate technology transfer and the commercialization of faculty, student and partner generated intellectual property; and
- Build provincial, national and international level strategic partnerships.
The Research Chair is expected to show leadership in applied and discovery research, creativity in undertaking high impact research, and commitment to building partnerships that advance college, regional, provincial, national and international strategic priorities.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Undertake applied and discovery research in the field of particle physics / ion source technologies / accelerators, using innovative methods and best practices.
- Take a leadership role in forging alliances with community partners and other post-secondary institutions and research networks.
- Involve students and faculty in planning and implementing an effective research program.
- Write applications for project funding.
- Undertake specific teaching assignments as may be appropriate from time to time.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Ability to effectively conduct research, meet deadlines and work with multiple timelines.
- Ability to work with regional stakeholders.
- Ability to develop grants and proposals.
- A track record in research and technology transfer and in linking knowledge with applications.
- Excellent Leadership, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
Education and Experience
- Ph.D. or Ph.D. Candidate in related discipline
- Minimum of three (3) years supporting SME innovation and technology transfer
- Proven track record of strategic partnership development
- Experience teaching and supervising students in a post-secondary environment is required
- Working knowledge of applied research and innovation at Selkirk College, its clients, and services is an asset
- A publication record is required
This is a short-term, part-time (50%) position. The term of appointment is three years and commences approximately September 16, 2024, through to approximately September 15, 2027. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Selkirk College Faculty Association Collective Agreement, Schedule A. $2,709.12 to $4,341.23 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience.
