The Nelson Police Department is hiring recruit Canadian Police Officers (in the Province and outside of British Columbia).
This is an opportunity to join one of the oldest departments in the province.
A small city with a big personality! Nelson is situated on the West Arm of the Kootenay Lake in the heart of the Selkirk Mountains and is home to an eclectic mix of long-time residents and those who are here for the lifestyle.
This vibrant town boasts many well-preserved heritage buildings, amazing restaurants, bustling coffee shops, retail and sidewalk cafes.
Nelson is also famous for its year-round playground for outdoor enthusiasts, such as skiing, hiking, biking, cycling, kayaking, boating and golfing, to name a few.
As a Nelson Police Recruit, you will undergo intensive and demanding training to ensure you are properly prepared for the challenges you will face as a police officer.
Nelson Police recruits train at the Justice Institute of BC/ Police Academy located in New Westminster.
Recruits are full employees of NPD during training and will receive the salary and benefits of a Probationary Constable.
You may be eligible as a recruit candidate if you:
- Are a minimum of 19 years of age;
- Have excellent character;
- Are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident (with a minimum of two (2) years of recent work experience in Canada);
- Have your grade 12 diploma or equivalent, PLUS a minimum of 30 credits of academic post-secondary education from an accredited university or college that falls under the BC Council on admissions and transfers;
- Are physically fit and in excellent health; able to pass the POPAT and medical examination;
- Have basic first aid certificate with CPR Level C and AED for British Columbia;
- Valid Class 5 British Columbia driver’s license with a good driving record;
- No criminal convictions, charges under another federal statute, or criminal charges pending;
- Uncorrected vision of not less than 20/40 with both years open, with one eye no worse than 20/100.

Compensation: The starting salary is $79,840 per the collective agreement as of June 30, 2025.
