Job Description

The Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire Service (KBRFR) is seeking motivated, community-minded and committed locals interested in using your skills and training to serve your community. You don’t need to be a trained firefighter to get started with us – you bring the integrity, talent and commitment, we provide the training and opportunity.  Our Crews have openings for Paid On-Call Firefighters at the following halls:

Fruitvale      Genelle         Montrose      Warfield       Rossland

Job No: RDKB202412

Why become a Paid On-Call (POC) Firefighter?

This is a job like no other. Once you’ve passed basic training and been fitted with all the required safety gear and uniform, you’ll be called to action serving your community. Paid On-Call Firefighters respond to 911 calls and are often first on the scene for fires, medical aid, wildfires, building alarms and a host of other aids to the public.

What’s involved?

To get started, you don’t need to bring a host of qualifications with you, but you do need to bring a keen interest to learn and succeed. From there, we will provide you with significant training and support, including:

  • NFPA Firefighter Level II
  • Driver Training and Air Brakes
  • NFPA 1051 Wildland Firefighter
  • Weekly training events

Will you get to fight fires?

You sure do. In addition, with the required training completed, you may qualify for supporting wildfire response crews during BC’s now annual fire season.

What else do POC Firefighters do?

Our crews are an integral part of the community. We participate in Community events charitable fundraising and provide important education to our communities about fire prevention and response.

Who can be a POC Firefighter?

Anyone living in our local communities. We come from all walks of life – teachers, bankers, journeymen, paramedics, home makers and administrators. We seek a diverse range of members to help us reflect the communities we live in and serve. We are especially hoping to find members who can respond during normal office hours.

How do I get started?

POC Firefighters attend weekly team training events at their Fire Hall and are expected to maintain a satisfactory level of fitness to ensure they are prepared to respond to anything that comes our way.

Additionally you will be provided with a full suite of safety equipment, including turn out gear, uniform, and other personal protective equipment. These are all provided a no financial cost to you.

POC Firefighters are paid $17.00/hr. This rate is currently under review for 2024. POC Firefighters also receive coverage through the Volunteer Firefighters Insurance Services (VFIS).
