Job Description

The City of Trail is excited to announce a brand-new opportunity:  Manager of Planning and Climate Action.

Are you ready to advance your career in local government planning while enjoying living in the West Kootenays?

We are looking for a dynamic and forward-thinking professional to help shape the future of our community.

With a newly adopted Official Community Plan and Zoning Bylaw, growing interest from developers, and the Kootenays emerging as a sought-after escape from major urban centers, Trail is poised for transformation.

We need an enthusiastic Planner to take on the challenge.

Reporting directly to the General Manager of Municipal Services, this position will serve as a crucial member of the management team, responsible for leading and providing expert guidance on a wide range of planning and sustainability initiatives, including land use planning, development approvals, environmental stewardship, and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

In this pivotal role, the Manager of Planning and Climate Action will:

  • lead all aspects of the City’s land use planning and development review processes, including applications related to the Official Community Plan, zoning, subdivision, development permits, variances, and Board of Variance;
  • develop and implement climate action and sustainability initiatives, including GHG reduction strategies, climate adaptation measures, and the creation of a Climate Action Plan;
  • provide technical and policy advice to Council, senor staff, and external stakeholders on matters related to planning, land use, climate action, and environmental protection;
  • update and maintain development-related policies, bylaws, and procedures to align with legislative changes, Council direction, and community needs.

The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, or a closely related field, and several years of progressively responsible experience dealing with all aspects of municipal planning.

The position offers a targeted salary range of $115,000 to $123,000 annually, supplemented by a competitive benefit package designed to attract and retain top talent in municipal leadership.

A detailed job description fully outlining the duties and qualifications is available here.

Qualified applicates are invited to submit their detailed resume via email to hr@trail.ca.

This opportunity will remain open until June 16, 2025.

We want to thank all applicants, however only those chosen for an interview will be contacted.
