Job Description

Based in beautiful Trail, BC, on the traditional territory of the Sinixt, Ktunaxa, Syilx and Secwepemc peoples, the Skills Centre is hiring a Building Maintenance Custodian.

The position pays $27.90/hr plus generous health, dental and RRSP benefits.

This position is based at the Skills Centre’s newly renovated office building in downtown Trail.

The ideal candidate will be proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to maintaining a safe and well-maintained environment for our employees, clients, and visitors.

The Maintenance Custodian reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for ensuring that our building is a well-maintained and clean building.

This position requires a knowledge of basic building maintenance techniques including plumbing, electrical and carpentry repairs as well as knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment and safe use and handling of chemicals.

Previous experience maintaining solar panels is a must.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Building Maintenance
• Perform routine maintenance tasks to ensure the cleanliness and functionality of the building, reporting any major issues to management.
• Assist with the development of maintenance routines and protocols for our newly renovated building in downtown Trail.
• Conduct inspections of the premises to identify maintenance needs, such as repairs, leaks, or damage.
• Address minor repairs and maintenance issues promptly, including fixing leaks, changing light bulbs, and repairing fixtures.
• Assist with the setup and breakdown of rooms for events or meetings, including moving furniture and equipment as needed.
• Assist with the maintenance of complex systems such as the solar array located on the building roof and the internal elevator.
• Maintain the exterior of the building, including keeping sidewalks clear of snow and debris.
• Collaborate with external vendors, skilled tradespeople and contractors for specialized maintenance and repair services when required.
• Monitor heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, adjusting settings as needed for optimal comfort and efficiency.
• Ensure compliance with safety regulations and protocols, including the use of proper PPE when required.
• Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, repairs, and inspections.
• Communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisors regarding maintenance needs, scheduling, and any issues that may arise.

Building Cleaning and Cleanliness
• Perform cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and vacuuming floors and surfaces.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms, including toilets, sinks, and fixtures, to ensure they meet hygiene standards.
• Empty trash bins and dispose of waste in designated areas and separate recyclable materials for proper disposal
• Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors to maintain a polished appearance.
• Refill restroom supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper as needed.
• Monitor and maintain inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, reporting any shortages or malfunctions.
• Assist in developing cleaning routines and protocols for our newly renovated building.
• Follow safety protocols and use protective equipment when handling cleaning chemicals and when otherwise required.
• Keep records of cleaning activities.
• Notify management of any maintenance issues or safety hazards observed during cleaning duties.
• Collaborate with team members and communicate effectively to ensure a cohesive and efficient cleaning operation.

Education and Training
• Completion of secondary education required with some post-secondary and technical or vocational training in building maintenance preferred.
• Knowledge of basic maintenance techniques, including plumbing, electrical, and carpentry repairs required. Additional training or experience in building maintenance techniques preferred.
• Previous experience in maintaining solar panels is required as the proper functioning of this infrastructure is integral to our ongoing green energy initiative
• Knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment and safe handling and use of chemicals.
• At least one year of experience in all of the above.

• Previous experience in commercial cleaning or related field.
• Knowledge of cleaning techniques, equipment, and chemicals.
• Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot maintenance issues effectively.
• Physical strength and stamina to perform manual labor and lift heavy objects safely.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently, adhering to safety guidelines, with minimal supervision and prioritize tasks efficiently.

Communication and Interpersonal skills
• Good communication skills and the ability to work well in a team environment.
• Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, fostering positive interactions with colleagues and a wide variety of clients.

Organizational and Time Management Skills
• Adhere to cleaning schedules and prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance.
• Keep records of maintenance and cleaning activities.

Professionalism and Workplace Presence
• Demonstrates professionalism, confidentiality, and a positive demeanor in all interactions and responsibilities.

WORKING CONDITIONS
• Full-time position, 40 hours per week.
• Flexible schedule with opportunities for some evening and weekend shifts.
• Work environment may include exposure to outdoors, cleaning chemicals, dust, and physical exertion.
