Instructor, Indigenous Ways Through Art
An instructor is required in the School of Academic Upgrading and Development at the Silver King Campus in Nelson to teach provincial-level INDG 60 Indigenous Ways Through Art.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
- In-person instruction of provincial-level INDG 60: Indigenous Ways Through Art
- Collaborate with Indigenous Elders, artists and facilitators to support an Indigenous arts-based learning environment
- Schedule Indigenous artists and ensure supplies and space meet their needs
- Liaise with prospective students and upgrading instructors
- Support course marketing with community agencies and Indigenous organizations
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
- Indigenous wholistic teaching philosophy
- Aptitude for engaging students in a trauma-informed and wholistic manner, including sensitivity to the reconnection of cultural practice for Indigenous students
- Understanding of the development and intersection of Indigenous contemporary art and traditional trained art forms (e.g., music, dance, visual art, storytelling)
- Awareness of how colonization and assimilation have affected and harmed Indigenous art and practice and how reconciliation has created reconnections to practice and community
- Lived experience and traditional training in Indigenous people’s ways of being with artistic practices, and Indigenous artists’ relationships with and connection/reconnection to community and the land
- Culturally appropriate and sensitive communication approaches with visiting guests and artists
- Adaptability and willingness to work flexible hours
Education and Experience
- A Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous studies, art, and/or related discipline.
- Five (5) years’ experience in Indigenous community-based instruction.
- Teaching Certificate or Provincial Instructional Diploma or related experience
- An equivalent combination of education and Indigenous cultural experience will be considered.
This is a non-regular, part-time (20%) position commencing April 21, 2025, and ending August 1, 2025. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the BCGEU Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2,763.30 – $4,428.06 (at a 100% appointment) bi-weekly based on qualifications and experience.
