
Head Lifeguard
Job Description
Under the general supervision of the Recreation Services Supervisor, the Head Lifeguard will work as a senior shift supervisor and will be responsible for the safety and supervision of lifeguards and patrons using the aquatic facility.
The Head Lifeguard will perform as a professional and dedicated team player in providing the best aquatic service to the community by participating in community outreach initiatives, providing team leadership and overseeing and evaluating emergency, operation and maintenance procedures.
It is the Head Lifeguard’s responsibility to implement the operational decisions of the Recreation Services Supervisor and foster a workplace environment that is oriented to trust, open communication, creative thinking, and cohesive team effort.
The Head Lifeguard assists with planning and facilitating staff orientation, staff training, and other administrative duties where required, and maintains familiarity with subordinate rolls by participating in Lifeguarding, Instructing, custodial tasks and facility maintenance.
Success in this position requires a high degree of flexibility and an ability to work varying schedules to meet operational requirements.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
As a member of the Aquatic Leadership team, responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Leadership
1. Collaborates regularly with Recreation Services Supervisor and Head Instructor to ensure a consistent approach to overall leadership of the team; is an effective team player
2. Supervises staff including, but not limited to: performing evaluations and staff development reviews, conducting in-services, staff training and performance management
3. Provides coaching and mentorship to Lifeguards; gives feedback and course corrects
4. Instructs Aquatic Leadership courses, including but not limited to NLS, AEC, LSI, Junior Lifeguard Club
5. Provides coverage for and support to the Head Instructor
6. Proactively engages in community outreach initiatives to support departmental objectives Operations
7. Leads staffing and recruitment initiatives, with support of Recreation Services Supervisor as necessary:
identifies staffing needs, leads Lifeguard interviews, checks references, makes decisions about hiring, organizes onboarding activities
8. Effectively schedules staff to ensure appropriate coverage and service levels
9. Communicates effectively with Aquatics Programmer and Head Instructor and makes recommendations for improvements or changes
10. Make day-to-day decisions regarding patron safety and ensure lifeguard to bather ratios are adequate
11. Responsible for daily communication between indoor and outdoor facilities in relation to staff shift coverage and operational information that should be passed on to other shift supervisors and departments
12. Responsible for ensuring the proper adjustments to staff work schedules and assignment of extra duties
13. Complete reports; shift reports, incidents and accidents. Conduct research and prepare reports as required
14. Responsible for making decisions regarding basic maintenance, shift changes and covering emergencies inside the building when necessary
15. Ensures a clean and safe environment at all times
16. Responsible for ensuring that Aquatic staff are completing the cleaning of pool and locker room areas to an acceptable standard
17. Completes daily operational checks
18. Performs basic maintenance and pool chemistry
19. Assists with making adjustments to equipment when necessary
20. Responsible for assisting with coordinating tasks during start up and shut down of the facility
21. Completes administrative duties such as facilitation of special events, inventory control, data entry and preparation of statistics and related assignments
22. Ensures shift reports and other administrative checklists are complete Safety
23. Ensures compliance with Health and Safety legislation
24. Provides new employees with safety orientation and follows up as required
25. Act as a person in charge of emergency procedures and action plan for staff
26. Monitor activities of the swimming pools by providing the highest standard of Lifeguarding with an emphasis on the prevention of accidents and injurie Patron Experience
27. Responsible for trouble shooting and handling customer concerns
28. Responsible for educating the public regarding the policies and procedures related to bather safety
29. Maintains order and ensures proper conduct of persons using the facility
30. Provides excellent customer service to all internal and external customers
31. Assists with customer service, program registration and answering telephones when necessary
32. Reacts to emergency situations and performs first aid when required Other
33. Performs other related duties and responsibilities of the HLG role as required
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
• Current NLS, AEC/SFA, LSI, CPR “C”, SI, AED, NLSI and FAI
• Minimum three (3) years experience in aquatics
• Minimum two (2) years experience in a supervisory role
• Experience working with MS Office (Excel, Word and Outlook) and other related office equipment.
• Valid B.C. Drivers License and safe driving record
• Satisfactory Criminal Record
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Current knowledge of provincial legislation, NL standards and health and safety as it relates to aquatic centre operations
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to work positively and collaboratively with supervisor, peers and subordinates
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage a diverse population of employees, maintaining a high standard of fairness, consistency and professionalism
• Demonstrated administrative skills for research and writing, scheduling and crafting communications
• Excellent customer service and public relation skills
• Independent decision-making, problem solving and analytical skills
• Strong leadership and team qualities for supervisory and peer interactions and relationships
• Ability to demonstrate accountability
• Demonstrated ability in performance evaluation of aquatic staff
• Ability to meet various deadlines in a constantly changing service environment
A high level of creativity and flexibility
• Experience with Recreation Software including registration, bookings and admin functions an asset
• Pool Operator I, LSIT or other aquatic awards an asset

The current rate of pay when designated as Head Lifeguard is $29.07 per hour as per the Collective Agreement.
This is a benefited which includes extended health and dental, disability coverage, life insurance plus 3 weeks paid vacation time to start and enrollment in the group 5 Municipal Pension Plan when eligible (as per MPP rules).
