Faculty, Digital Arts
The School of Arts & Technology is seeking an instructor to teach Digital Arts 228 Publication Design. Publication Design introduces students to more advanced typesetting methods and principles required to design content-rich products and publications. Students’ foundational skills in typography and graphic design will be developed through practical design projects, with an emphasis on understanding, evaluating and enhancing pre-existing content. The successful applicant will integrate the design and publication of the college’s annual Black Bear Review into the practical project. This involves some collaboration with creative writing students and faculty.
The Digital Arts program offers students hands-on experience and a solid foundation in traditional and graphic arts, website development, video and sound production, animation and digital media. The course is delivered in-person at the Tenth Street campus in Nelson, though some online delivery may be required. The successful applicant will share Selkirk College’s student-centered values and mission “to provide personal experiences that build confident and imaginative learners ready to thrive in their community and in our dynamic world.”
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop and deliver teaching strategies and assessments that meet course outcomes
- Review and update curriculum to ensure currency and relevance
- Evaluate student progress and provide constructive feedback
- Provide support and cooperative assistance to students
- Act with professionalism and integrity at all times
- Other related duties as assigned by the School Chair

- In-depth understanding of typographic fundamentals and typographic techniques used in editorial design
- Expert knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
- Ability to apply the fundamentals of information design and content strategy
- Project Management skills
All candidates are required to submit a portfolio showing evidence of previous experience in publication design.
Education and Experience
- Successful completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant area such as Publication and Design, Fine Arts, Visual Communication, or Digital Arts; or a two-year diploma with a minimum of five years of directly related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Demonstrated successful post-secondary teaching experience is an asset.
This is a short-term, part-time (23%) position commencing December 16, 2024, and ending April 23, 2025. Salary and Benefits are in accordance with the Selkirk College Faculty Association Collective Agreement. The salary range is $2,709.12 – $4,341.23 bi-weekly (at 100% appointment) and is based on qualifications and experience.
