An employee in this classification, under the direction of the teacher, provides universal targeted and intensive supports related to academics, the core competencies, physical and/or mental health needs in order to support an inclusive school classroom and community
Reporting to: School Principal or designate
Illustrative Examples of Work:
Assists teachers to include students in classroom, school and community activities/field trips
Facilitates and encourages positive and respectful interactions between students with special needs and other persons
Adapts and/or modifies classroom and curriculum materials to meet student and/or group specific needs as directed
Assists with the implementation of behavioural intervention plans which may include non-violent crisis intervention strategies and/or student safety plans
Accompany and participate with students on community outings related to their programming needs (ie. swimming, life skills)
Assists teachers in implementing Individualized Educational Plans (IEP). Duties may include preparing notes/materials; data collection; helping individuals or small groups of students with instructional tasks and attending, as part of the school based team, meetings/workshops as requested by the Principal/Vice-Principal
Under the direction of professional personnel and following specialized training when required, provides medical assistance and/or administers medication to students as outlined in a medical care
Use a wide range of equipment to support student learning including current adaptive technologies, augmentative communication devices, computer systems and software
Provides for the ongoing physical needs of the child, including: toileting, feeding, dressing, mobility, personal hygiene
Implements physiotherapy, occupational therapy programs
Supervises individual or small groups of students as required
Participates in job-related training and professional development
Performs other job related duties
Required Abilities and Qualifications:
Grade 12 or equivalent
Fluently bilingual. Demonstrated fluency in both English and French in both the receptive and expressive modes, oral and written
Completion of an Education Assistant one year certificate program, which includes a practicum, or equivalent combination of education, recent training and experience
Valid non-violent crisis intervention certification
Ability to demonstrate participation in continuous learning
Ability to be consistent, firm, and supportive in carrying out the program services for the students
Ability to work collaboratively and co-operatively as part of a team with students, the public and staff
Ability to work independently and with confidentiality
Ability to use technology related to the work performed
