Christina Lake Fire Rescue provides fire protection and emergency services within Electoral Area C/Christina Lake as part of the Christina Lake Fire Protection Service. It is a composite fire department consisting of 1 Fire Chief, 1 Assistant Chief and a dedicated team of paid on call Captains, Lieutenants and Firefighters. The Department responds to a variety of emergency situations including fire suppression as the main mandate, as well as medical first responder emergencies, motor vehicle incidents, auto extrication and also responds to rescue situations on land, ice, and water. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary (RDKB) is seeking a reliable and qualified individual for the new position of Deputy Fire Chief – Operations and Training with Christina Lake Fire Rescue. Reporting to the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief is responsible for directing and delivering first responder, fire and emergency service training to all members. The Deputy Fire Chief will assume the duties of the Fire Chief in his absence, act as Duty Officer on a rotating basis and is responsible for overall maintenance and effectiveness of department equipment, vehicles, supplies and facilities. The successful candidate will be required to live within the Christina Lake Fire Protection area.

This position will suit an energetic individual who is experienced and dynamic in leading training and operations. Key work examples in this role include:

  • Respond to emergencies; establish command and direct incident operations.
  • Perform fire fighting, rescue, first aid and other fire related services.
  • Develop, implement and manage training programs for all fire department personnel.
  • Monitor and test firefighter skills and readiness, deliver training programs to remedy limitations.
  • Provide feedback that supports professional growth of department personnel.
  • Assist the Fire Chief with recruitment, retention, performance and other personnel matters.
  • Oversee the Christina Lake Fire Rescue arm of the Work Experience Program, in cooperation with Big White Fire Department leadership.
  • Arrange maintenance repairs to buildings, apparatus, and equipment.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with key community stakeholders and act as a department representative with community groups, mutual aid partners and government agencies.

Required certifications, skills and abilities for this role:

  • Extensive related Fire Department experience in progressively more responsible roles
  • NFPA 1001 Level 1 and 2
  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I
  • Current EMA-FR Certification
  • WSPP-WFF1 Wildland Firefighter
  • WSPP-115 Wildland Structure Protection
  • ENGB Engine Boss
  • Incident Command System 200
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License with air brake endorsement; satisfactory driver’s abstract required
  • Satisfactory criminal record and vulnerable sector check
  • Working knowledge of and ability to effectively operate computer programs such as FDM, MS Office, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered

  • NFPA 1021 Fire Officer II
  • NFPA 1001 Evaluator from a recognized training institution
  • First Responder Instructor with Schedule 2 endorsements
  • WSPP WFF1 – Wildland Instructor
  • NFPA 1521 Incident Safety Officer
  • NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector, preferred
  • NFPA 1033 Fire Investigator, preferred
  • Incident Command System 300
