Job Description

The Nelson and District Women’s Centre has an opening for a Volunteer Coordinator.  The Volunteer Coordinator is a part-time position with a rate of pay at $18.00/hour, plus a $1.15/hour health benefit upon completion of probationary period. During regular operations the position will be 10 hours per week, while delivering a series of volunteer training workshops or during special events, hours may increase up to 15 hours per week.  The Volunteer Coordinator schedule is generally 2 to 3 afternoons/week and may include occasional evening or weekend hours.

The Volunteer Coordinator is a core member of our team and volunteers are the heart of the Women’s Centre.  Through the work of the Volunteer Coordinator and dedication of our volunteers, we can offer a range of support and services, create healthy community and sustain the important work of the Nelson and District Women’s Centre.  The Volunteer Coordinator will work together with the Executive Director to recruit, train, schedule, and coordinate Women’s Centre volunteers in diverse roles and activities.

The Nelson and District Women’s Centre is a feminist organization that has been in operation since 1972.  Our aim is to create healthy community through providing support for women and advancing gender equality.


§  Volunteer management including coaching, support, and oversight to all volunteers

§  Maintain regular data collection and documentation of volunteer participation and services provided

§  Develop, facilitate, and regularly update Rooted in Community volunteer training sessions

§  Plan and coordinate annual community events, including fundraising initiatives

§  Manage all social media accounts


§  Education and/or experience in volunteer coordination

§  Education and/or experience in developing and delivering education or training sessions; comfort with public speaking

§  Education and/or experience in planning and coordination of special events and community engagement activities

§  Well-organized and self-directed; ability to excel working both independently and as part of a team

§  A passion for working with people and building relationships

§  A strengths-based, non-judgemental, and client-centered approach to service provision

§  Demonstrated cultural awareness and responsiveness in working across diverse populations

§  Demonstrated understanding and commitment to feminist, intersectional, trauma-informed, and anti-oppressive frameworks

§  High ethical standards and professionalism

§  Working knowledge of community services and resources in the area is an asset

§  Physical ability to lift up to 50lbs

§  Criminal record check, including vulnerable service sector

§  Black, Indigenous, women of colour, women living with disabilities, and women of working class backgrounds are encouraged to apply
