Job Description

Reporting to the Information Systems Infrastructure Superintendent, the Technician, Communications is a technical generalist for Trail Operations communications systems and will take technical guidance from Communications and Network team members and assists with troubleshooting and performance analysis of our communications systems and their infrastructure subsystems. This role will be operationally focused around public address, radio communications, telecommunications infrastructure, video surveillance, communications systems for environment monitoring data collection, physical security and access control necessary to support Trail Operations with a strong emphasis around advanced support and performance tuning of mission critical systems.

Responsibilities:

Participate in project delivery where advanced skill, experience, and new complex techniques are essential to ensure business requirements are met and the respective services are highly available Participate in the management, building, tuning, and maintenance of communication systems in conformance with industry and enterprise standards and best practices Participate with the Network, Control Systems, Electrical or Instrumentation groups to maintain, troubleshoot, and resolve problems related to the existing physical network infrastructure Assist in the pre-wiring, installing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of products and services including but not limited to the wiring infrastructure which supports fire and gas alarms, security systems, smoke detectors, telephones, cable jacks, control panels, speakers, antennas, voice activated systems, and audio/video systems and network Ethernet cabling and fiber optic cabling Prioritize, schedule and organize work order queues including status update communications to customers Participate with the fabrication and assembly of components comprising of critical equipment that interfaces to new or existing communications systems Train users, technicians, and trades personnel in operating and/or servicing procedures and work with engineering staff, consultants and contractors during the design, installation, and commissioning of new projects to identify training requirements Participate in preventative maintenance of all radio communications networks and equipment. Assist with the maintenance of rental and service contracts for company leases and owned equipment Participate with the implementation of digital, wireless or cellular communications systems to support environmental monitoring equipment including video systems, environmental data collection and process monitoring Use sophisticated test equipment to identify and solve problems. Aid in performing advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis often working with team members, support personnel, engineering staff, consultants or vendors to resolve complex problems Maintain the communications systems library of manuals, specifications, ‘as-built’ drawings and diagrams, and database of systems records, inventories and components. Manage and maintain an appropriate stock of spare parts and supplies Conduct quality control services and audits for optical fiber, data and Modbus cabling to ensure technical specifications and installation quality are met This role will also assist the Network group with physical installation of network equipment (Routers and Wireless Access Points) Ensure the confidentiality of sensitive information (security systems, precious metals, cameras, recording equipment and data systems) and it’s disclosure to appropriate personnel Observe all safety, environmental and hygiene rules and regulations in the performance of duties

Qualifications:

Must have a diploma from a two-year program in a communications technology or electronics technology program from a recognized College or Institute of Technology, or must be a Certified Electronics Technician (CET) and/or Journeyperson Minimum of two (2) years of working experience with some or all of the following communications systems: physical access control, video monitoring and recording (IP and Analog), public address and emergency messaging and land mobile radio Good knowledge of analog and digital communications and networking (voice, video, data) disciplines of information and communications technology is required Manufacturer certification(s) in cable terminations (copper and fiber) an asset Excellent problem-solving skills, good communication and interpersonal skills Abilities to influence and direct others, work independently, manage multiple priorities and work to deadlines
