Technical Specialist, Electrical Engineering
Reporting to the Asset Planning and Reliability Manager, the Technical Specialist, Electrical Engineering is accountable to, as it relates to Trails electrical assets, effectively implement, monitor, control and execute Trail’s Maintenance and Reliability Engineering processes and support Trail’s Asset Planning process.
The role aligns Plant and site-wide priorities and sets expectations for the electrical engineering team. The role ensures the output provided by the electrical engineering team is to an appropriate quality and provides recommendations on how best to balance the workload across the electrical engineering team to ensure the highest overall impact to Trail, aligned with Trail Operation’s plant, equipment and infrastructure requirements needed to achieve the 5 year and 20 year business plans.
Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures Manage the Electrical 5 & 20-year Major Maintenance and Capital Project portfolio through the definition of project risk, scope, cost and execution duration estimates, and recommended execution timeframes Writes Risk Based Business Assessment (RBBA) documents for proposed electrical Major Maintenance and Capital Projects, and updates the documentation based on tentative timing and scope changes Builds scopes of work for electrical Major Maintenance and Capital Projects with sufficient detail for budgeting Supports the Shutdown Process through work scope and RBBA documentation Manages design changes to equipment stemming from approved actions identified through failure investigations or assessments of chronic equipment identified in the Bad Actor process Manages electrical engineering consultants engaged to provide equipment design, scope development or other engineering tasks Conducts electrical equipment condition assessments and creates corrective actions for repair. If required, initiates Major Maintenance or Capital Projects for the repair Supports the asset integrity and asset renewal components within Asset Management Plans Executes engineering studies for electrical Major Maintenance and Capital Projects progressing through stage gate 1 Provides guidance as the electrical engineering Subject Matter Expert through the planning and execution phases of capital projects Responsible for executing the equipment Management of Change (MOC) process for modifications to electrical equipment design Builds electrical commissioning plan as part of major maintenance and emergency repair scoping Identifies site wide electrical ‘bad actors’ that are having a negative impact on costs or production based on direct referrals, incident reports, production incidents, maintenance cost reviews and other data analytics. Initiates a Reliability Incident Report (RIR), Root Cause Analysis (RCA), or Bad Actor Situation Appraisal (SA) as required. Makes recommendations on how to eliminate or reduce the asset risk, assists plants in the development of action plans to address the impact of critical equipment or parts on the overall reliability of the plant, develops implementation schedules and goals, and follows-up to ensure adherence to schedules. Uses a combination of preventative maintenance (PM), predictive maintenance (PdM) and Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) for development of asset maintenance strategies within JD Edwards (CMMS) and MTell (Trail’s asset health monitoring software). Performs other related duties as required
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a specialization in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline Minimum 18 years of work experience in mining, smelting, refining or similar heavy industrial facilities Eligible for or is registered as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of British Columbia (EGBC) Experience with electrical power systems, power conversion technologies, motor control, AC & DC drives and other power electronic devices, crane controls, electrical power modeling and programmable control systems Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as effective interpersonal and problem-solving abilities Demonstrated supervisory and mentoring experience Demonstrated ability to innovate, identify and develop major improvements in design or operation in several technical and operational areas Demonstrates effective decision making, fully accounting for all business and technical aspects Familiarity with CMMS systems is an asset
