Position Overview You’re an Information Systems (IS) wizard and know what it takes to construct applications, systems and a robust technology infrastructure that brings business operations into the future. Your detail-oriented and strategic approach ensures you capture all of the necessary requirements for any project, and you utilize your interpersonal skills to build solutions that are designed with internal stakeholders in mind and address business needs.
In this role, you’ll create a long-term strategy for infrastructure technology by working with senior IS managers and business stakeholders. You’ll also organize development efforts for system solutions from inception to completion. This includes documenting our existing processes, conducting functional analyses, and developing initial requirements for system solutions.
In year 1, you will: Familiarize yourself with FortisBC procedures, processes, applications, and infrastructure landscape, and build relationships with our employee end-user community. Help with defining forward-thinking improvements to align with the IS Infrastructure Strategy. Support implementing solutions and ensure they're thoroughly tested and documented.
In year 2, you will: Become more involved with all technical areas, such as new and existing infrastructure technology, HA/DR and backup strategies. Conduct application and system technology research of existing, new and emerging technologies to support business and IS strategic plans. Assist Enterprise Services, Architecture, Infrastructure and Cyber Security groups with designing governance, guardrails and processes for applications and systems.
What it takes: A bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, system analysis or a related study, or equivalent experience with a minimum of 7 years of related experience in the utilities sector or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Extensive knowledge of multiple technical areas, including network, all relevant server platforms, DR strategies, data centre management, backup strategies, and infrastructure. Demonstrated knowledge of data networking technologies like TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLAN, subnets, routing, switches, and firewalls is considered an asset. Excellent strategic thinking skills for tactical and operational planning activities, and to lead innovation by implementing best practices and cutting-edge technologies. Effective collaboration and coordination skills to gain insights from departmental experts and deliver projects shared by multiple business groups. Great attention to detail for designing the governance, assurance and standards activities associated with ensuring enterprise technology architecture compliance of projects and products.
In this role, you will have the option to participate in a flexible work program, enabling you to work from an approved flex location in British Columbia up to 85 days a year (equivalent to approximately two days a week), subject to business or operational needs.
Our engaging workplace offers a wide range of challenging opportunities, while being safe, inclusive and diverse. We offer a competitive salary and benefits package, while supporting life-long career development. We also encourage volunteerism and nourish the need to give back to your community.
