Wood currently has an exciting opportunity for a Structural Engineer. Reporting to the Engineering Department Manager, this position is located in our Trail, BC office.

This role has responsibility for providing Structural Engineering and Design support on a wide variety of projects for clients in mining, power generation, and other heavy industries.

Our Trail office currently numbers over 50 engineers, designers and support personnel. Trail, located in Southeastern British Columbia near the cities of Rossland, Nelson, and Castlegar, is an affordable family-oriented community of approximately 10,000 people. Key responsibilities

  • Designing heavy industrial structures related to mining and mineral processing, pulp and paper, and hydroelectric facilities; covering structures such as mill processing buildings, conveyor galleries, loadout facilities, storage facilities, bins and tanks. Experience with reinforced concrete and structural steel design codes is required
  • Writing specifications and contract documents as well as reviewing project documents prior to issue for scope and presentation, including checking for technical accuracy
  • Developing and maintaining positive communication channels with clients and internal personnel to ensure that work flows smoothly
  • Business Development to maintain repeat work from key Clients
  • Coordinate with key personnel and subject matter experts within other Wood offices.
  • Efficiently and effectively managing multiple tasks independently and in a multi-disciplinary team environment
  • Design of foundations
  • Support the preparation of proposal documents
  • Review project documents and drawings for technical quality, accuracy and compliance with applicable client standards and stakeholder requirements
  • Participate or lead project design reviews
  • Overseeing the work of staff throughout various project stages — from conceptual, feasibility, and detailed design thru construction
  • Reviews discipline progress, budgets, performance, and develops action plans to meet project objectives.
  • Leading and mentoring subordinate staff
  • Ensure considerations of safety and protection of the public are incorporated into all aspects of project development
  • Establish excellent working relationship with other functional areas and project managers and support cross-functional reviews and design improvements
  • Develop close working relationship with Construction Management team, support active construction sites, answer RFIs, perform field reviews, support project constructability reviews
  • Creating an environment that fosters technical excellence, accuracy, and timeliness
  • Evaluating existing facilities and structures
  • Designing and/or overseeing design of modifications to existing industrial facilities
  • Working closely with electrical, process & control, architectural, civil, mechanical, and geotechnical disciplines to deliver successful projects Skills / Qualifications
  • Civil/ Structural Engineering Degree from a recognized university with P. Eng. status in B.C. or eligibility for immediate registration
  • 5-10 years of relevant industrial engineering experience at various stages of the project life cycle
  • Familiarity with safe work requirements at heavy industrial sites is an asset
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high volume and deadline-driven environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Excellent interpersonal and decision-making skills
  • Positive attitude and ability to effectively work in a team atmosphere is imperative
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Committed to continual improvement and achieving engineering excellence
  • Demonstration of specific experience with aspects of Project Engineering and/or Project Management roles including ownership of overall project scope, schedule and budget management would be considered an asset
