Job Description

Reporting to the Manager, Technical Services, Trail (TST), the Section Leader, Environmental Technology, is accountable for the activities of the environmental technology team and the planning and execution of research and technology projects for corporate and operations clients of the Technical Services Trail (TST) group. In addition, the role develops, collaborates and supports the execution of short and long-term plans to drive excellence and innovation in the environmental field aligned with business strategies and evolving needs.

The scope of the position is to develop and strengthen the environmental technology capabilities of the Technical Services group. Plan and execute programs that support Teck's business's growth, improvement, and sustainability by applying environmental technology processes. Manage internal and external resources to deliver high-quality outcomes on time and within budget. The incumbent is a recognized company expert in the field of environmental technology.

Responsibilities:

Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures. Establish and promote the maintenance and continuous improvement of a safe and healthy working environment through personal commitment to the TST Environment, Health and Safety Policy principles. In addition, ensure compliance with specific TST Environment, Health and Safety System responsibilities. Develop and execute TST’s research and technology projects and business plans that support the growth, improvement, and sustainability of the TST Environmental program. Ensure TST Environmental projects address the current needs of the business and future needs are anticipated and supported through associated strategies (e.g. research, innovation, workforce). Develop and maintain effective relationships with Teck operations staff and other technical stakeholders. Develop TST Environmental staff and technologists using People Central as a framework for coaching and mentoring discussions. Enable and make recommendations for recruiting, promotion, job evaluation, development, transfer, and performance management of employees. Work with the union to maintain agreements and seek appropriate conflict resolution where necessary. Work as a member of the Environmental leadership groups to develop a strategy and 3-5 year plan for the development and growth of the TST Environmental Technology section. Use the strategic plan to set objectives for continuous improvement in the efficiency, productivity, and quality of the section. Establish, implement, and continuously improve leading practices in the environmental field. These will align with the broader scope of Teck’s environmental practice standards and the industry’s practice standards and guidelines. Manage the workload of the Environmental Technology staff and technologists and foster a team environment to make the most efficient use of TST and external resources. Ensure that Teck clients are kept abreast of project progress and monitor and control program costs against the TST budget and technical plan. Review and author high-quality technical reports and presentations for Teck clients clearly outlining the conclusions and recommendations arising from technical projects in addition to the associated value or business impact where applicable. Develop and apply theoretical and scientific understanding in the Environmental Technology area to technical projects. Act as a technical consultant to internal clients in the field of environmental technology. Stay current on applicable leading-edge science technology and innovation through literature reviews and technical conferences. Establish and maintain a broad international network of internal experts, industry contacts, research partners, contractor-consultants, technology vendors and universities to support environmental programs. Promote the development and use of TST’s capabilities in the environmental technology field to identify improvement opportunities at existing operations and reduce the risk associated with new mines and resource definition. Qualifications:

A minimum of fifteen (15) years of advanced environmental technology in the minerals industry. Hold a postgraduate degree in Environmental Engineering, Ph.D. is preferred. Be registered with, or eligible to register with, the relevant accreditation body(es). Be thoroughly familiar with practices, methods and concepts in the environmental field and be able to apply associated principles to advance project/operational programs. Strong attention to detail and process, creative and innovative with excellent abilities to integrate all environmental disciplines in decision making. A student of the industry who possesses, or can develop, the background and expertise to manage the analysis and selection of technology and innovative practice as it applies to the environmental field. Advanced written and oral English skills. Superior writing, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required. Spanish language proficiency is an asset. Successful candidates must be fully vaccinated against infection by COVID-19.
