Communities Served: Regional (Trail, Nelson, Castlegar, & surrounding areas)

Vacation: 4 weeks/year

Agency Summary

Freedom Quest provides free, community-based, client-centered, low-barrier, confidential, voluntary, and non-judgmental services and programming to youth who are, or who are risk of being, adversely affected by substance use in the West Kootenay Boundary Region. Freedom Quest’s services and programming support these young people in experiencing new opportunities, overcoming barriers, preventing further adversity, building positive relationships, and developing the confidence and skills for life.

Program Summary

The Recreation Mentorship Program is an activity-based therapeutic program that supports young people aged 12-19 and their adult mentors in building healthy relationships with each other, other participants, and the facilitators of the program. The program is focused on supporting youth who have been adversely impacted by, or who are at risk of being adversely impacted by, substance use. With their adult mentors and through the shared experience of outdoor recreation activities, youth will a) be invited into activities that may have previously been inaccessible to them, b) be introduced to programming that facilitates healthy relationships, c) participate in physical activity to promote their overall wellness, and d) learn new skills.
