Job Description

Reporting to the Technical Superintendent, Maintenance Engineering, the Mechanical Engineer is accountable for providing their assigned business area with guidance on the integrity of area’s equipment, risk assessments for equipment needing repair, and well-defined repair scopes for work that requires technical expertise beyond the skills of the supervisor, trade, or planner roles.

Responsibilities:

Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures Manage the business area 5 & 20-year Major Maintenance and Capital Project portfolio through the definition of project risk, scope, cost and execution duration estimates, and recommended execution timeframes Writes Risk Based Business Assessment (RBBA) documents for proposed Major Maintenance and capital projects, and updates the documentation based on tentative timing and scope changes Builds scopes of work for Major Maintenance and capital projects with sufficient detail for budgeting Supports the Trail Shutdown Process through work scope and Risk Based Business Assessment documentation Defines and tracks work quality requirements using Trail’s quality management process Manages design changes to equipment stemming from approved actions identified through failure investigations or assessments of chronic equipment identified in Trail’s Bad Actor process Manages engineering consultants engaged to provide equipment design, scope development or other engineering tasks Conducts equipment condition assessments and creates corrective actions for repair Supports the asset integrity and asset renewal components within Asset Management Plans Executes engineering studies for major maintenance and capital projects progressing through stage gate 1 Provides guidance as the area’s maintenance engineering Subject Matter Expert through the planning and execution phases of capital projects Responsible for executing the equipment Management of Change (MOC) process for modifications to equipment design Provides scope of work when area maintenance department requires technical expertise beyond the skills of supervisor, trade, or planner roles Builds commissioning plan as part of major maintenance and emergency repair scoping Supports the procurement process for non-standard or specialty parts May be required to perform other duties

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with a specialization in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline Minimum 4 years of work experience in mining, smelting, refining, or similar heavy industrial facilities Eligible for, or working towards, registration with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of the Province of British Columbia (EGBC) Familiarity with CMMS systems is an asset Experience with mobile equipment, mechanical and electrical systems Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as effective interpersonal and problem-solving abilities Troubleshoots and optimizes in substantial technical projects or an operational area Effectively applies and develops technical knowledge to address business issues Formulates sound analyses leading to balanced and timely technical decisions Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite package Supervisory and mentoring experience would be an asset Municipal utilities experience is an asset
