Job Description

The Village of Fruitvale is seeking an enthusiastic, energetic, and self-motivated team member to fill the position of LABORER.

Under the direction of the Foreman or Lead Hand, this position performs laboring duties associated with the operation and maintenance of the Village infrastructure and assets. In the performance of these tasks, the Labourer must exercise good judgment.

The minimum requirements for this position that MUST be met are as follows:

• Valid BC Driver’s License, minimum Class 5 with air brakes endorsement. • Minimum Grade 12 graduation or equivalent. • Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training. • First Aid Level 1 minimum. • Ability to interact with other employees and the public in a tactful and courteous manner. • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. • Ability to understand, interpret and apply written Public Works policies and procedures. • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position and in accordance with WorksafeBC recommendations. Manual labor may require strenuous work. • Experience in maintaining and operating machinery and equipment is seen as an asset. • Certification under the Environmental Operators Certification Program is seen as an asset. • Supplemental training in the trades is seen as an asset.

Duties and capabilities include, but are not limited to:

• Work in different weather conditions with exposure to the elements; • Operate and maintain various equipment and tools including single-axle dump trucks, garbage truck, tractors and various lawn and landscaping equipment; • Perform parks maintenance; • Perform labor duties; • Assist with labor assignments related to water treatment and distribution and waste water treatment and collection;

This position is within the Bargaining Unit – CUPE, Local 2087 and wages and hours worked are as set out in the collective agreement. The 2021 probationary wage rate is set at $29.78/hour increasing to $31.70/hour with successful completion of a 60 days worked probationary period.
