Intermediate Environmental Scientist

SNC-Lavalin Environment has one of the most experienced environmental and geosciences engineering consulting teams in Canada and is currently seeking an Environmental Scientist to support our Western Canada Team in our Trail office. You will play a key role as part of our soils team in developing, managing and executing work related to contaminated site assessment, remediation and reclamation projects specifically related to components of the Trail Area Health & Environment Program (see below). Day to day work will include investigation design and characterization, evaluation of remedial strategies, communicating with clients, liaising with regulatory personnel, and mentoring junior/intermediate site assessment professionals. Other technical responsibilities will include project coordination, cost tracking and report preparation.

The Trail Area Health & Environment Program (THEP) is a community program promoting health and the environment in the Trail, BC area (www.thep.ca). Our soils team provides risk-based solutions to managing wide-spread metal contamination on public and private property. With the focus of preventing lead exposure to young children. We work with families, local residents, developers, and others offering a comprehensive program of supports and up-to-date information. With over 25 years’ experience, our program has greatly improved air quality and reduced lead exposure in children through various programs including Family Health, Air Quality and Home & Garden. Our collaborative approach has been recognized with a BC Premier’s Award. The SNC-Lavalin office in Trail delivers the Home & Garden and Property Development portions of the THEP including soil assessment, soil remediation, the Healthy Homes, and Lead-safe Renovation support programs.

WORK EXPERIENCE: 10 to 15 years
FIELD OF STUDY: Engineering, Geology, Agrology, Biology or Environmental Sciences
Degree from a program with relevant subject matter with eligibility for professional designation Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience encompassing project coordination and project management and with emphasis in the areas of contaminated site assessment, remediation and reclamation; Demonstrated experience in activities related to environmental site assessment and remediation such as; Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) including groundwater monitoring and sampling techniques, various drilling techniques, soil sample collection and logging, soil vapour sampling, remedial excavations, reclamation, spill response and quality assurance / quality control protocols; Strong understanding of regulatory frameworks and guidelines of the Environment Management Act and specifically the BC Contaminated Sites Regulation under the Ministry of Environment & Climate Change Strategy; The ability to work well in a team environment; Strong communication skills and experience in public facing roles such as responding to questions and interacting with the public on large-scale development or environmental projects; Experience managing contractors and working closely with clients on large, multi-year projects Self-motivated, high energy, strong organizational and time management skills; Strong written and verbal communication skills in the English language; Capable of understanding and appropriately applying prescribed safety and technical protocols; Experience in routine statistical analysis would be an asset; Candidates may need a Valid Class 5 Full driver’s license. JOB DUTIES:
Provide project management oversight of fundamental tasks related to soil management, remediation scopes of work and report preparation. Communicate with and oversee on-site field staff during work execution. Manage contractors and field-staff to ensure the project is delivered as per pre-defined specifications. Review and evaluate large amounts of field collected data to support data gap analyses and selection of remedial options. Provide technical expertise for contaminated site investigation, remediation and reclamation programs. Interpret findings and prepare and review technical reports. Interact with clients and provide verbal and written project updates. Track budgets and identify and communicate scope changes in a timely manner. Supervise and mentor staff involved in carrying out field programs; ensure project requirements are communicated and health and safety protocols are followed. Promote a positive Health and Safety culture. Participate in business development activities and maintaining client relationships. What we offer at SNC-Lavalin:
