Job Description

The Development Director will develop and implement donor stewardship strategies to achieve organizational and program fundraising goals. Reporting to the Executive Director, this position will be a member of the senior management team.


Key responsibilities:

-Develop donor stewardship strategies to engage new donors

-Maintain relationships with individual and corporate donors, including major donors

-Support grant writing and reporting

-Reach quarterly and annual fundraising goals

-Actively seek out innovative and creative fundraising methods and opportunities in donor cultivation through emails, phone calls, in-person meetings, tabling, digital, and other means.

-Assist in renaming efforts of the organization and communicate timeline and journey to EcoSociety members

-Ensure donors’ questions and concerns are addressed through monitoring general email address

-Update, utilize, and maintain EcoSociety’s database

-Take part in related communities of practice and share learnings

-Ensure adherence to key messages and language to communicate with intended audiences

-Act as organizational spokesperson and Ambassador when necessary

-Supervise development support staff


-At least three years experience with non-profit organization(s) successfully leading in development and fundraising, prefer candidates with experience in environmental or social justice fields

-Outgoing personality and must enjoy cold calling

-Experience in sales and/or marketing is considered an asset

-Experience working in diverse teams and a strong desire to practice justice, equity, diversity and inclusion

-Experience writing fundraising emails and verbally pitching fundraising asks to donors or corporate sponsors

-High energy, attention to detail, positive, and solutions-oriented attitude

-Passion for working to fulfill EcoSociety’s mission and values and promote EcoSociety’s work

-Flexibility to work some evenings and weekends, when necessary

-Preference for experience using engagement organizing

-Suitable home office: comfortable working on a computer full time; expert-Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office, GSuite, email management, WordPress, Zoom, Google Meet, CRM management

The successful candidate ideally lives in the West Kootenay region, however candidates from other regions in BC and Canada, particularly those with lived experience in rural and small town communities, are encouraged to apply and will be considered. If the successful candidate lives outside the West Kootenay region, they may be required to relocate to the region once EcoSociety re-opens community offices. However, preference will be given to experience and skills over the current residential location of candidates.

EcoSociety is a Living Wage Employer. Currently, this is a work from home position, and a quiet space to work is required. Employment benefits include:

-4 weeks paid vacation (prorated), with flexibility around dates to accommodate staff needs

-Work from home $50/month allowance (reimbursement) and paid 30 mins daily exercise (prorated), while offices closed due to COVID

-Supply technology needs for work from home, as required

-Paid sick days

-Paid Statutory holidays including Boxing Day and Easter Monday, and additional consideration for days of cultural or religious significance

-Flexible work hours/work life balance
