Job Description

Reporting to the Superintendent, Human Resource Planning & Talent Management, the Claims Management Coordinator is accountable for the adjudication and administration of the Company’s short-term disability (STD) and long-term disability (LTD) programs at Trail Operations.


Be a courageous safety leader, adhere to and sponsor safety and environmental rules and procedures Corresponds and maintains regular contact with STD claimants on the status of their claim and to obtain sufficient medical documentation to establish and maintain the claim Adjudicates claims according to the collective agreement, policy and plan documents and advises the Pay Office of transactions associated with the administration of STD and LTD claims Provides information to supervisors and employees on the interpretation and application of Claims Management policies and procedures. Conducts regular supervisory training and crew talks on the interpretation, practices and application of STD and LTD programs Coordinates transfer of claims information when the employee’s return-to-work is anticipated or prior to submission of the LTD claim; and maintains regular contact with LTD provider with respect to the adjudication, administration and management of the claim Develops policies and procedures consistent with applicable collective agreements and generally accepted adjudication practices to ensure proper administration and adjudication of STD claims; develops protocols to ensure the confidential flow of STD claims management information within the Disability Management Group and the organization generally Maintains records and prepares reports with respect to STD, LTD, and WCB benefit utilization and costs and participates in the development of strategies to control those costs Works with representatives of public and private insurance carriers (WCB, CPP, Sunlife, and ICBC) to identify overpayments and coordinate repayment terms where possible Verifies and authorizes payment of invoices received from physicians as per the terms of the STD benefit plan Conducts a preliminary investigation and review of worker injury information to manage initial WSBC claims as required Liaises with the employee, Labour Relations, Union, treatment provider and pay office regarding the coordination of treatment programs for substance abuse Explains and encourages the use of the Employee & Family Assistance Program services to employees as appropriate Consults with claimant’s supervisor and Labour Relations personnel to keep them apprised of confidential concerns regarding potential abuse of benefits plans, monitors past history for abuses, reports abuse to the Group Leader, and takes corrective action as required Performs other related duties as required


Post-secondary education 3 -5 years’ experience of Claims and Disability Management experience including exposure to programs of self-insured short term benefits, long term benefits as well as WorkSafe BC matters Demonstrated technical expertise and interpersonal skills to facilitate consultations and liaison with management, union representatives and with external legislative agencies Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills Effective analytical and problem solving skills and abilities to outline recommendations to Leaders and outside agencies Demonstrated knowledge of collective agreements and applicable legislation and regulations and their application to disability matters as well as demonstrated ability in legislative interpretation Demonstrated understanding of conflict resolution techniques Demonstrated teaching skills utilizing adult education principles Ability to work effectively, independently and in collaboration with others
