Job Description

The Business Climate Advisor position was developed by local industry and non-profit leaders to support the growing number of businesses expressing interest in being involved in organizational climate action in Nelson and area. Many want to make a difference but are unsure how to have a real impact.

To support local businesses in becoming effective and coordinated climate actors, the Business Climate Advisor will both a) equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to develop a customized strategic and easy to implement response to climate change, and b) provide a platform for experienced and emerging climate actors to connect, collaborate and learn from one another.

The Business Climate Advisor is supported by a cross-sectoral advisory group of business, economy, climate and civic leaders in Nelson, the Nest Lab, and The Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce, in cooperation with the Nelson and Area Economic Development Partnership, and the City of Nelson.

Through the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce, we are seeking an experienced program coordinator for a three-month contract position (up to 35 hours per week). While this is a short-term contract position, there may be an opportunity to transition to a longer-term part or full-time position if there is a fit and more funding is made available.

Duties and responsibilities will include the following in the first three months of this contract position:

Business Engagement ● Network and engage with local businesses and nonprofits to gather data and determine what level of climate action initiatives they are currently undertaking, as well as the supports they require to continue or expand their climate action ● Develop a baseline understanding of businesses' knowledge on their contribution to climate change to design and implement impactful climate action initiatives ● Create a positive and interactive online platform for local organizations to share knowledge, resources, and success stories related to climate action ● Research funding opportunities and pursue relevant grants

The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and qualities: ● Qualifications ○ Post-secondary education or equivalent ○ Experience in the sustainability and/or climate change fields, and a basic understanding of climate science and low carbon resilience ○ Experience, training or education in communications, marketing, or a related field ○ Familiarity with the goals and objectives within the City’s Nelson Next Climate Plan ○ A strong understanding of the Nelson and area business community ○ Experience working in an organization mainly composed of volunteers ○ Experience developing and managing strategic partnerships ○ Strong project management, research, and writing skills ○ Basic data analysis skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite

● Qualities ○ Excellent communication skills, both written and interpersonal, able to build and maintain professional relationships ○ Detail-oriented and multi-tasker ○ Self-starter - able to perform and be motivated independently ○ Professional and persuasive communication skills ○ Respects and values equality and inclusiveness ○ Passion for, and knowledge of climate change and climate change solutions ○ An understanding of the Nelson area and the provincial British Columbia non-profit, environmental, and funder communities ○ Comfortable with technology and excited and capable to learn new tools ○ Ability to adapt to, and manage, quickly changing priorities
